The bread box has been a staple in European and American homes for centuries. This one came from France, but most of the round bread boxes are German, so this one may have originated in the German part of France, the Alsace. The box dates to the 1920's and is decorated in the Art Nouveau style. The condition is very good considering its age: it has the bumps and bruises of a long life, but is still clean and intact. The hinge is sound (although it has one screw replaced) and the latch works great. You could even put a pad lock on it. These are great decorating pieces; I can picture this one on a shelf holding Naan bread or a fresh boule.
Measurements are: 14 ½" diameter and 6" high. There is a nice brass handle on the top.
