This is an interesting book in French about the life and work of Cardinal Mercier, Cardinal Archbishop of Mechelen (Belgium). The book is 414 pages and quite substantial. It contains lots of photos of the clergy of the day and all of the churches and religious places the Cardinal lived at. The book also contains about 135 letters with autographs written at his death, of all of the important people of the day, including King Albert, the King of Spain, Bernard Shaw, Herbert Hoover, Benito Mussolini, and so on.
This book is a limited edition, although I could not find the number, I believe this to be the papier cuve Van Gelder, numbered 76 to 250. The paper is heavy and has I believe a watermark in it. The book also contains artwork by L. CH. Crispin and a tipped in plate, several tipped in handwritten letters and numerous beautiful wood engravings. This is all in all a very unique book.
Condition: the condition of this book is not great. The front cover is loose and the spine is missing. The cover pages have some foxing, but the rest of the book is tightly bound and the pages are clean. The marbling of both the front and back cover is fantastic (it was why I pulled the book from a stack).
Book measures 12 1/2" by 10" by 3" thick. It weighs 7 1/2 lbs.
