Here is a 19th Century woven oak splint market or gathering basket with canted sides and carved wood handle. The basket has dark green 6 pointed star designs around the top. The basket has a double carved bent wood rim wrapped with reed or narrow length of splint. It has a dry nut brown surface and is in unusually good condition. I see no breaks or loss. The basket was made by one of the Woodlands Indian tribes of New England.. It is 14.5" to the top of the handle, 9.5" deep from rim to bottom, 9" across at the handle and 16" long at the rim. The basket has character and visual appeal.. Great to fill with lithographed cloth animals or old rag dolls.
