Offered is a 16" 1850's Sophia Smith china doll with rich pink tint complexion, brown eyes with black pupils and black center parted hair with chin length curls all around. Dolls has black arched single stroke brows, black eye liner,black pupils with tiny white highlights, red lid lines, eye dots and nose accents. She has a nicely painted small red mouth with narrow white space between lips and slightly extended corners. She has rosy even cheek blush. Doll has 10 spiral curls close to her head. Head and plate are 4.25" tall, 4" shoulder to shoulder with 3 sew holes front and back. China is fine quality with only one pepper speck found on the shoulder. Head and plate are free of chips, cracks or hairlines. There is a tiny paint miss on the right cheek by the eye. The face and plate are free of rubs. Hair has 3 small rub spots in back on top of head. Doll has the most appealing face of the Sophia Smith models in my opinion.
Doll is on a firm linen body with lower legs ending in black leather boots with heels and red and white horizontal striped stockings with red garters above and white leather lower arms with nice hands having individual wired fingers. Body is hard stuffed with wide hips and narrow waist. Doll is sewn across knees and has rounded buttocks which allows her to sit nicely.
Doll wears a lovely old red wool dress with cream wool pinked scallop trim. The dress opens down the back and fastens with 3 matching shell buttons and button holes. She has white work trimmed pantaloons. Doll is in good sturdy condition and is in an appealing cabinet size. She is a Kestner product made between 1850 and 1860. She has a blue exhibitor ribbon.
