Marked German Porcelain Black Bisque Nodder, Ethnic Features
This very desirable lad measures 5-1/4 inches seated but would be 9-1/2 inches tall if he were standing. Judging from the wide smile on his face, he is proud of his feline artwork on the chalk board. Nodders are simple head nodding figurines that attract attention when they are touch and begin to move. They come in many shapes and forms, even in animal form. They were manufactured as far back as the 1800's and have become very collectible over the years. In case you are not familiar with the rather simple mechanics of "nodders," they are made with a removable head with a metal pin on each side of the neck for placement in indents on the neck opening of the torso. There is also an attached heavy cylinder that fits into the torso that causes the head to rock back and forth when it is touched. This nodder is incised "Made in Germany" in block lettering on the underside of the chair. The modeling is superb in his bare feet, strong hands, molded hair and distinct ethnic features.
