The Doodle Dog is a companion to the Kewpie figures that were designed by Rose O'Neill. The Kewpies were made primarily in Germany but some of them were commissioned for manufacture in Japan. I had never seen the Japanese version of the Doodle Dog but I believe this is one of them. It is marked with the incised O'Neill mark same as the German versions, but it is made of glazed china instead of bisque. It is probably a much rarer version of the Doodle Dog. He is priced much less than the German version would be. There is also a tiny stamped number, either 5 or 6, under the O'Neill mark. He is absolutely adorable and his face closely resembles the Kewpies with the blue wings, side glancing eyes, bashful tucked under chin and a thinly drawn red line mouth. Other than the usual surface crackles you find on aged glazed china, there is no damage and no restoration.
