Oil painting on board by Hardesty Gilmore Maratta (1864 - 1926) portrait of a Native American. Signed lower left HGM and dated 2 - 11 for February 1911. Nice small size - measures 11 1/2" x 8 3/8" framed; 9 3/4" x Width: 6 1/2" sight. Framed under glass.

Hardesty G. Maratta was active in Arizona, New Mexico, and California. He is best known for landscape painting and recording Native American rug designs in watercolor and oil. Born in Chicago in 1864, Maratta was a well known watercolorist and designer of pottery for the Gates Teco Pottery Company of Terra Cotta, Illinois.

Maratta studied at the Art Institute of Chicago where he exhibited from 1888 to 1906. His works are in the Santa Fe Railroad Collection; Delaware Art Museum, Wilmington; Harvard's Fogg Art Museum, Cambridge, Massachusetts; and Hubbell Trading Post Museum, Ganado, Arizona.
