A nicely framed and matted McKenney & Hall Hand Colored Print of Native American Indian Mon - Ka - Ush - Ka - A Sioux Chief - c. 1855. Published by D. Rice and A. N. Hart of Philadelphia; Lithograph printed and colored by J. T. Bowen. Octavo size measures 13" x 17" framed.
As Superintendent of Indian Affairs in the US War Department in the early 19th c., McKenney commissioned oil portraits of the Indian Chiefs when they came to Washington to sign peace treaties. These paintings were used as the basis for the History of the Indian Tribes of North America in three volumes which contained the original prints. The oil paintings hung in the Smithsonian and ultimately were destroyed by fire in the late 19th c. leaving the prints as the only record. This is an original 19th c. print. The series has been reissued and reprinted several times but only the originals have the wonderful sharp colors and historical interest.
We have a large collection of the various portraits - all originals and all framed alike. These make a beautiful statement hung together in clusters. Perfect for the library of den.
