I would have listed this item as a glove or stocking holder but for the fact that the lining inside does have a small stain that looks somewhat like ink! This led me to believe that it could in fact be a Repertoire, from the late 19th Century, repertoires being in vogue at that time as holders for love letters, especially in France.
This is a lovely example. The outside being a very pale shade of green satin finished silk, the lining is a very soft shade of shell pink. The piping around the edge matches the colour of the outside perfectly. The front has been hand painted with delicate pink and white flowers with yellow stamens at their centres. The silk is still in a good strong condition, with the only sign of wear being on the inside where the lining joins the piping. Measuring 14" long x 6" wide, 11" when opened flat.
A lovely feminine item for the boudoir and useful too!
