This truly is a stunningly beautiful cover. The background silk fabric is strong and in stable condition and is a rich burgundy wine colour.
Created at the turn of the century, the cover is lavishly hand embroidered with flowers, birds and butterflies and one fallow deer (my favourite!). Worked in silk threads, with a wide and varied palette throughout. Please study the photographs carefully, to really appreciate the fine quality of the embroidery, especially in the workings of the birds and deer of the central medallion - it truly is second to none.
This is a large cover, measuring 108" (274 cm) in length x 87" (220 cm) wide. This does not include the hand knotted fringe which is 11" (28 cm) long and is worked around all four sides.
It is lined in a good quality cream silk. For its age, the condition is wonderful, with just signs of gentle wear, commensurate with age. There are large metal "eyes" sewn at the four corners on the lining fabric, as though the piece may have been destined to be a hanging of some sort, but it was clearly never used as such, because its weight would have caused some distress to the fabric over time but it remains in perfect condition.
The colours of the fabric, the fringe, and the embroidery threads, remain bright and unfaded. The fringing and tassels are smooth and untangled.
It is genuinely difficult these days to find pieces of this quality. This cover could truly be classed as museum worthy. It would enhance the finest of textile collections. Or make an incredible and dramatic statement piece about the home - stunningly beautiful and useful, always has to be a winning combination!
