In the manner of the finest miniature furnishings originating from the Brittany region of France is this wonderful upright spinning wheel. It is a perfect folk art miniature in every way - even down to its functioning foot pedal and turning wheel. I am sure that an expert could add cording to properly thread it for spinning once again. The piece appears to be made of turned oak with a dark stain and highlighted with contrasting ornamental stylized flowers and finials. A few minor bits are missing: there was certainly a tall spindle originally that is now gone, two of the little dangling pieces beneath the base are no longer there, and a few of the carved ornaments are chipped or missing. But, none of these flaws minimize the impact that this stately piece would have in a doll display, especially of fashion dolls in regional costumes. I have photographed the spinning wheel with Mlle. Lily, who is wearing her gardening frock and stands 18" tall for scale purposes.
The entire piece measures 13 1/2" tall and a maximum of 9 3/4" wide and 5 1/2" deep (34 x 24.5 x 14 cm). The foot pedal is painted with the word "Strasbourg", which is a picturesque city in the north of France near the border with Germany. One could certainly imagine this wheel being purchased there long ago as a souvenir of a delightful stay. Now it is just waiting to be displayed once more. Note: I have cleaned the original finish on this piece so that it will show to its best advantage.
