Whether they collect sewing implements or items to display with antique dolls, collectors of many persuasions will love this little item! It is a whimsical Victorian sewing etui, housed charmingly in the shell of a real walnut! Occasionally one can find these on the marketplace, but seldom in a shell in such good condition. The interior sports a chased silver platform that is pierced and lined below the surface in a manner that receives the variety of tools housed within. The tools include two silver thimbles, a gutta percha thread winder, a miniature awl and half of a silver needle case. Naturally, an avid collector would delight in the search for additional tools to add to the collection.
The walnut shell measures 2" (5 cm) long. It has a lovely patina. The clasp works well, and both halves of the shell fit together. The inside of the lid section is unlined. There are a very few minor cracks to the shell on either end of the walnut, and they appear to have been filled. As I mentioned, half of the needle case is missing, but it does not show if the case is placed properly into the receptacle. It is a charming item to place into the hand of a favorite doll!
