This miniature hatbox may actually be a nineteenth century sewing etui, but it is the perfect scale to display with our beloved Demoiselles... or Monsieurs! It is made of leather with tiny metal studs where one would expect them, and lined with silk. The swooping curves of the lid and angle of the sides are in perfect imitation of the full-size hatboxes that it is meant to emulate. A leather strap goes over the top and is caught by a turn-clasp to hold the lid closed. Inside the lid, the original velvet pin cushion is in place, and further inside the base the original elastics meant to hold sewing tools are also in place.
As you can see by my photo of the hatbox and Mlle. Lily (18" or 46 cm tall), it is well-scaled for display with dolls in the classic 17 - 18" size range. It measures 3 1/2" tall x 3 1/2" wide x 3 1/8' deep (9 x 9 x 8 cm). There is some minor wear to the leather covering, and breakage to the elastics within the box. Still, it has a fantastic "look" and would be terrific in a display with either Ladies or Gentlemen with a French heritage.
