Description:
This is a fantastic oak dining set with the table plus six original leaves, curved glass china cabinet, server, and sideboard. Made in Jamestown, NY, a major furniture manufacturing center around 1890 by Himebaugh Brothers who were in business from 1886-1928. Another testament that R. J. Horner was not the only manufacturer of griffin furniture.
This is a matched set, always together; resided in New York until the mid 1960s when it went to south central Virginia. This is not an assembled set.
Round, quarter sawn oak dining table with full body, winged, sitting griffins supporting the top and surrounding the center column. Griffins resting on the empire style platform supported by large paw feet. Six original leaves in flat sawn oak. 54 inch diameter with six 8.5 inch wide leaves.
Curved glass china cabinet with full standing griffins on the carved pilasters flanking the door. Supported by paw feet. 65.75 inches tall, 50 inches wide, 18 inches deep.
Oak sideboard, heavily carved with standing winged griffins on carved pilasters flanking the over mirror and two more matching standing griffins on the side pilasters of the base. Supported on paw feet. 62 5/8 inches tall, 64 inches wide, 25 inches deep.
The server, a piece rarely found intact with a set is also adorned with standing griffins on carved pilasters with plentiful carving; supported on paw feet. 42.25 inches tall, 42 inches wide, 20 inches deep.
It came from being used in a home in Danville, VA to the auction house and two days later to me. It is so rare to find such a set that had not been muddled up. All pieces have what we consider normal wear and are structurally sound. There are no old repairs that we have found.
There were no chairs with the set but a set could be located that will marry well.
Everything is in superb estate condition as it came from the home. The finish is the original finish which is the color of fumed oak. Fumed oak was and is done using ammonia fumes which react with the tannin in oak to impart the blackish color. This was later done with stains and is eventually enhanced with the finish darkening with time. There are some areas which should be addressed. An area or two of veneer on the table base can be easily corrected. It is pictured here as it was purchased.
This is one of the more exciting purchases we have made!! In un-muddled condition offered at a very reasonable price as is.
