These are a set of four side chairs only, in the Chippendale style with ladder back or ribbon back and straight molded legs.
Although many would say these are mahogany or walnut, they are not. They are sweet gum. Presently they are a medium walnut color. We have reglued these chairs, cleaned the surfaces, recolored and recoated with a satin lacquer. Made around 1900 as dining chairs. The wood, sweet gum, is often used in furniture (more often than most realize) as it stains well, wears well, and is stable.
Please realize when shopping for chairs a set that has been reglued and/or refinished properly will be your best buy. Chairs take more abuse than any other piece of furniture in the home so most are loose, some very loose. These are priced low since there are only a set of four.
In my shop I charge 150 minimum to reglue a loose chair. A broken chair is more. To reglue and refinish a chair is usually 250-350 depending on the style of the chair and what has to be done to make everything right. This does not include upholstery work. So you can see, a set in which the cost per chair is 200-400 that has been reglued and refinished is a bargain-provided the word was done by a competent restorer. You are getting the chair free and paying for the work!!!
