Fabulous very old Wooden Painted Beer & Ale Trade Sign. This sign was found in a basement in a very old house in Elmira, NY. It was being used as a shelf in the basement, note the outline of the paint cans on the reverse side.
The sign is from the late 1800's and was hung with hand made rose head nails, noted by the shape of the holes. The nail holes are square and the large impressions on the front are from the rose hammered heads. A fantastic early early beer sign, would love to have had an ale at the place where this hung.
The board is odd shaped more than likely was a board taken from something and made into this sign. The type face is early and the ampersand is fantastic. The sign is 43 3/4" long x 15 1/2" high.
