This is a very interesting cast iron "finial" or fence post topper, or pier piling topper. This piece is from the early 1800's and possibly the late 1700's. Very simplistic in form yet very functional. The purpose of these was to protect the top of a wooden post or piling from rotting. We know it was from a wooden post as the old hand made pins that held it in place are still intact, see photos. This is a wonderful example of old hand hammered iron.
The piece is 12" tall overall and the round base is 4 1/2" tall and 5 1/4" OD and 4 15/16" ID. It was defiantly mounted on a wood post of some sort as indicated. The condition is an old pitted iron surface. Weight is 9.6 lbs.
