I am slowly selling my personal lighting collection as well as inventory. This is an old Victorian hanging parlor oil lamp circa 1880s-1890s. It remains in the original oil condition. I have been selling and collecting lamps for over 45 years and I have never seen a hanging lamp with painted decoration like this one. As a matter of fact, I have only had one other old shade that was tooled in this manner.
The shade has a winter scene. The main theme is of a young lady all bundled up in her winter coat, sliding down hill on her toboggan sled with her guardian angel or cupid flying behind, clinging to her shoulder. The little guardian angel figure really seems to be a cupid boy in snowshoes as he carries a bow in one arm. The snow shown in the pictures has raised enamel paint in some places and looks like real snow. The top of the shade flares slightly to the outside and is rough factory ground. It is only the second old Victorian antique shade I have had that is finished in this manner on the top rim. The bottom rim is the typical rounded and fire polished. I noticed a small chip on this top rim which may be in manufacture but inconsequential. The crown fits over this rim. I noted a manufacture straw mark in the glass on the tree which can be seen in one of the pictures. The shade has a nice solid ring to the glass when tapped. The picture is also unusual as it is partly a transfer that is over-painted (girl on toboggan scene) while the rest of the shade is all hand painted.
The frame is in original oil condition and has not been recently polished or cleaned. The top ceiling mount canopy has the original pull down mechanism. which still works. As shown in the picture, the lamp extends approximately 34 inches from the top cast iron hook on the mechanism. It will pull down to a longer length but only retract just a little because of the little round stops on the chain. The font is marked B&H (Bradley & Hubbard) on the fill cap and flame spreader. The original wick is still inside. Not all the brass pieces have the same exact pattern on the trim edges. I do not recommend trying to use oil in a lamp this old without professional guidance as it has not been used in oil for a very long time. The prisms are all old as well.
Since this is what is known as a "center draft" burner, the flame spreader is in the center hole of the burner, and if removed it is simple to electrify if desired.
This lamp will be securely packaged for transit. The shade will be double boxed and may be sent separately depending on overall size of package. I have enjoyed this lamp for many years but time has come to down size.as I have now moved to a much smaller home recently. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions you may have. Note: Shipping cost is for mainland U.S. If shipping is less to your area than I have estimated, excess will be refunded and if more, I will pick up the extra cost. Shade will go Priority, frame via ground.
