For your consideration, I offer a large and valuable historical history book titled: "Sears Pictorial Description of the United States" . On the first title page it reads" A new Popular Pictorial Description of the United States" New York Published by Robert Sears, 181 William Street, 1853. On next page which also appear to be a title page style: "Pictorial Description of the United States".....each state and territory in the Union.....new edition, revised and enlarged, 1855. On the back of this title page "Entered according to Act of Congress in the year 1854 by Robert Sears", etc. I list all this as there are several editions of this volume over the years. This one was in the same family for over one hundred years. The initials of the original owner are on the first blank page.
Although age worn and with some foxing to some of the pages, the book is in very good condition. I noted a creased page and a couple with small missing or torn off paper in the margins. The board covers are somewhat faded dark brownish-red with gold color writing and illustrations. The binding on the spine is a little frayed top and bottom and corners lightly bumped. Inside, the original glassine protective cover on the first inside illustration, although torn, is still there. The book has 648 numbered pages plus about a dozen extra pages including contents pages. This is a valuable source for any history buff of the settlement of our country complete with profuse black and white illustrations of cities and towns within each state or territory and their history. I am not a rare book dealer but I have had several valuable and historical books from this collection in very good condition. I offer two methods of transit.
