This antique sterling silver inkwell is amazing! A must-have for any collector. This impressive inkwell is manufactured by Sheffield and features the Sheffield marks of the crown, Lion passant with letter date a lower case “g” in old English script. The Sheffield identifying marks are preceded by the makers mark the initials “H.E.” with the letters “L.D.” below. All marks are located on the inkwell base at the left front.
The inkwell has a broad square base tapering to a smaller top. It features a hinged lid with a distinctive finial. Each of the four (4) corners of the base has a raised curl giving it an eye catching appeal. The hinged lid has a leaf design on all four (4) sides. The insert for ink is porcelain. There is a registry number stamped inside the bottom of the inkwell “11704”.
The inkwell measures 4 inches square at the base tapering to 1 ¾ inches at the top. The well itself is 1 ¼ inches at the top. The well itself 1 ¼ inches deep. The hinged lid is 1 7/8 inches. The entire inkwell is 3 ½ inches height.
The inkwell is in very good condition with no chips, cracks or hairlines. Circa 1899-1900
