Judd Company Description

Morton Judd began a small machine shop and foundry in New Britain, Connecticut, in 1917, developed the M. Judd and Sons Company in 1830, and was eventually joined by all three of his sons in 1855. In the 1850s there was also a factory in New Haven, Connecticut. In 1870, H.L. Judd (one of Morton's sons) took over the company and the name was changed to H.L. Judd. Growth of the company resulted in a larger, more modern factory located in Brooklyn, New York, in 1875. Unfortunately, in 1884 a fire destroyed the factory. A new home was established in 1885 in Wallingford, Connecticut, as the permanent homes of the new factory, administrative and sales offices remaining in New York City. The Company also established branches at Boston and Chicago, carrying stock in both places for the convenience of these sections. H.L. Judd Company was acquired by Stanley Works in 1954, and became the Stanley-Judd Division, still located in Wallingford, Connecticut.

Judd pieces are some of the highest quality iron pieces seen, with great attention to detail, enduring and interesting painting techniques, and durable tow-piece construction in many cases. In addition to bookends, the company also made brass beds, inkwells, and fishing lures.
