Perhaps in days of yore booksellers purveyed their wares by means of mobile carts, or perhaps this set of bookends depicts a flea-market setting in which the bookseller has his books collected in a cart. This Syroco wood set is very rare, and in excellent condition.

Syroco, Inc. Company Description:.

The Syracuse Ornamental Corporation currently is housed at 7528 State Fair Boulevard, Baldwinsville, New York 13027 (315-635-9911 ext. 2242). The company had its origins in 1890. A group of European craftsmen soon were in great demand as a result of the hand-carved fashion pieces they provided for fine homes and institutions, including the governor's mansion in Albany. In an effort to make such styles available on a wider scale, a technique was developed of molding reproductions by compressing a mixture of waxes, wood flour, and resin. This type of product was used primarily to provide carving details to furniture. After World War II, Syroco developed a line of home decorative accessories, including many bookends. Syroco bookends most often have a support plate attached to the resin figure, with natural wood hue the most common finish, although pieces are also available in a variety of colors. The company's historical records were lost in a recent fire, preventing greater insight into the company's history.
