Chippewa Lake Antiques
is now SOLDThis is a beautiful silk collapsible top hat from the Victorian era. It was made in Munich, Germany by Hermann Tiess and is in near excellent condition. There is virtually no wear at the upper rim, all the stitching is tight, the collapsing mechanism works well, and the brim is nice and stiff. There are a couple of very small scuff marks on the flat top from storage, but the fabric is not torn and you can only see these when the light is shining the right way. Otherwise the hat is perfect.
The inside circumference measures at 22 1/2" sizing this to 7 1/4 as close as I can tell. The top hat measures 6" in height, the rim measures 12" x 9 1/2".
These hats are easy to collapse. To preserve the mechanism press down evenly on the top of the hat. I usually place the top of the hat against my stomach or thigh and press evenly against the sides of the brim. To open, hold the hat by the brim and briskly hit the opposite end against your forearm. The hat will pop open with an audible snap.
This hat does not come with a box. The best storage would be tissue paper and a bubblewrap envelope with the hat in closed position.
