Just a dynamic and large (36x46 image only) oil by one of the best of the California desert painters-Paul Grimm (1893-1974). This is a rare subject for Grimm, who is know mostly for his paintings of the Palm Springs area, and Mt. San Jacinto. He is also know for his High Sierra paintings, which he painted in the summer months, when ti got too hot to paint the desert scenes. early in his career Paul Grimm worked as a backdrop painter for the movie studios, and made a small fortune doing it. He "retired" to the Palm Springs area in 1934, and remained there for the rest of his life, painting his beloved desert. I personally have sold many Paul Grimm paintings over the years, both small and large, and have several in my own personal collection. Later on in his career I feel he got too quick in his executions of his paintings, and the quality suffered for it. But in the early years, up into the early 1940's. his work is full of variety, richer colors, and better, more thought out execution.
In the early 1990's. Joan Irvine Smith purchased the entire Paul Grimm estate of paintings; Grimm was her favorite artist, and many of the books that have come out of the Irvine Museum feature many of Grimm's best works. There are probably over 20 pictured in Smith's autobiography, more than any other artist! Lately, many of these paintings have been coming to market, bringing record prices!
The painting I have here is from that earlier period of Grimm's career, probably the late 1930's. The age of the canvas and stretcher bars, as well as the original gold carved period frame, give me this indication. Grimm's style of framing changed over the years, and the frame style gives on an indication of when the painting was executed. The painting is in excellent condition, needs no cleaning, and is ready to hang. There is a tiny patch on the back from a very minor flaw that has been expertly repaired; there is also a bit of staining on the back of the canvas, but it does not effect at all the front image. Just another beautiful painting from the gallery of Vander Molen Fine Art. For many more fine paintings you may find us on the internet.
