A very, very hard to find item, vintage salad servers in the Morning Star pattern, 1948, Community line, Oneida Silver. They measure 11 inches long, and have black plastic ends. The serving fork is stamped 2nd as shown, and the serving spoon is not. Oneida Silver had extremely stringent standards for inspection, and anything that did not have the pattern struck perfectly, or had a tiny scratch on the surface, was stamped 2nd, or 2, and was sold at factory store events that were eagerly awaited by those in the Central New York area, since Oneida 2nds were perfect looking to anyone but inspectors, normally. These were found in the estate of an Oneida worker family member, and I am also listing a service for 12 today in this pattern, all of those marked 2nd, and I assure you, it is not possible to tell what caused them to be rejected. Often this was just a small contact scratch, which prevented a piece from being shipped out, but would be acquired on perfect pieces as soon as they started being used, anyway. Both pieces are in great condition, the plastic which was supposed to imitate horn or ebonized wood, is a bit gray on the shafts from age fading, but not really an actual issue, just consistent with age. They have been freshly hand polished.
