The best and most highly unusual cameo that I have ever encountered, an antique, latter Victorian period 14K gold, pearls, rose cut diamonds, and hardstone cameo depictinga Male figure, obviously historic. The family believed it to be Wild West hero Buffalo Bill Cody, and it was in an outstanding collection of Wild West memorabilia. However, a respected authority on cameos has advised that it may well be the image of painter Peter Paul Rubens, which seems as likely. Ay any rate, he is a beautiful figure, beautifully carved.
It measures two and one eighth inches long not including the little diamond studded cap that is attached from a loop on the underside. This cap would originally had a pearl on it, most likely which has gone missing. A pearl can be added, OR the cap can be removed without showing any loss, since it is attached from a loop on the underside and does not show from the top. The only other issue whatsoever is that at some point in the past, someone tested the gold by scraping up the heavy pin bar, so it isn't perfectly smooth, see photo of the back side.
The cameo portion is sardonyx. While it appears black and opaque, when it is held to the light, the beautiful warm deep slightly translucent brown can easily be seen. The setting is heavy and sturdily constructed, with thick support and several layers of construction.
The piece is unmarked. The gold and diamonds have been tested by a highly reputable GIA gemologist and appraiser while he was assessing a different piece for me, and he expressed that it was the finest cameo piece that he has ever seen, and I agree. Guaranteed to be 14K gold and diamonds and pearls, and all original.
