Large Japanese lacquer ware box beautifully decorated with the flying cranes motif. For the Japanese, the crane or tsuru is considered a national treasure. The Japanese regard the crane as a symbol of good fortune and longevity because of its fabled life span of 1,000 years. It also represents fidelity, as Japanese cranes are known to mate for life. The box has a nice reflective sheen and is skillfully etched with the design in polychrome colors. An impressive large size measuring 9" long by 9" wide by 6" high. In good vintage condition with a few small nicks which are not distracting and reflective of the age. A great piece for the box collector and a distinctive accent piece.
