Alfred Duke oil on canvas portrait of three dogs----a setter, pointer, and Brittany spaniel. Apparently ready for a hunt, they patiently wait for the master outside a charming English cottage. The painting is masterfully done in subtle dark and light tones which gives it an almost photographic appearance. The painting is signed in the lower left hand corner. Painting measures 16" high by 12" wide. The frame which appears to be only the inside frame (fillet) measures 17.5" by 13.5" and is 1" wide. The fillet retains a beautiful gold leaf patina.
Alfred Duke (1863-1905) was a renowned British animal and sporting painter. He was believed to have been born in Lancashire around 1863. He spent most of his life in Manchester and exhibited regularly at the Manchester City Art Gallery. He also exhibited at the Royal Society of Artists, Birmingham and the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool. Duke's works are beautifully painted and show an excellent understanding of the conformation and movement of dogs.
