STUNNING large Minton powder-blue gilded pedestal bowl decorated with wide band of floral and geometric enamel and gilding on exterior and centre interior. This gorgeous centre bowl was designed by John Wadsworth, Minton's art director, as part of an Art Deco line he introduced in 1938 that included Rotique, Tulippa and this pattern called 'Byzantine'. This decorative centre piece is in outstanding condition and pictures do not do it justice. It is is large, eye-catching and very modern in feel. An excellent designer signature piece. Mintons mark and pattern number on base as shown. Measures 9"D (top) x 4.75"H x 5"D (base).
Excerpts from Joan Jones, 'Minton - the first two hundred years of design and production' 1993:
"This range was well above the ordinary in the field of earthenware from the aspects of both design and craftmanship. Mr Wadsworth has been able to let himself go and reveal how beautiful earthenware can be made to look when it has sound potting and craftsmanship behind it. 'Byzantine' was supplied in a choice of ground colours; blue, green, pink and hazel brown. These underglaze powder-coloured grounds were stippled and immersed in an acid bath to dull the colours. Then prints were applied which were filled in by hand with harmonising enamel colours, outlined in gold. 'Byzantine' borders comprised half-suns with triangles and the centres were stylised floral arrangements in an octagonal surround." The New York World's Fair opened on April 30th 1939. A report relating to the Minton stand commented, 'It may surely be said of such flawless beauty that its loveliness increases, for one feels that here, if ever, artistic perfection has been attained'.
