Delightful Aynsley collector's cup with hand-finished, raised enamel flowers on a snow-white background. Green backstamp dates this set to 1934-39, the same era as the famous butterfly and flower handle cups. The wonderful clarity of enameling is typical of the period. I have not been able to locate this particular pattern for sale anywhere! The central motif is a large pink peony (or stylized rose) surrounded by cornflower-blue and aqua blossoms - a re-imagined classic Asian design, beautifully rendered. The footed cup is gently flared with gold scalloped rim. Reinforced French loop handle and foot are hand enameled and so are the large, four-petal aqua flowers, giving a wonderful texture. Pattern #B1835 is handwritten on base of cup and saucer, along with enamelers' marks (blue star on cup, four green dots on saucer, picture 6). This set is in outstanding condition - very slight gilding loss on rims; no cracks, chips or hairlines. Slight flaws from the manufacturing process add to its charm. Rings like a bell. Cup measures 3.25"D (rim) x 2.5"H; saucer 5.5"D x 7/8"H.
This is part of the MacMillan Collection, assembled in the past century by Norma and Marion MacMillan and their mother Hattie. Norma MacMillan was the beloved voice of Casper the Friendly Ghost. This cartoon series was created for ABC's New Casper Cartoon Show that ran from 1963 to 1969 on Saturday mornings. Norma's devoted husband, Thor Arngrim, spent his final years living at PAL Vancouver and so a portion of sales will benefit this vibrant community of creative people (see 'Favorite Links' in left hand menu bar).
