DIRECT FROM EUROPE, a tall reticulated and gilded compote by Sandizell Porcelain, Bavaria, made in the 1950's or '60's. The town of Sandizell is north of Munich and quite a distance from Dresden so even though the mark says 'Dresden' it means Dresden-style. Sandizell is well-known for its 20C ceramic lace figures. Here we have a very attractive handled compote or center piece in blue-grey hard paste porcelain, elaborately decorated in the Rococo Revival style, standing 10" high. The interior of the comport has a beautiful spray of Dresden flowers or Deutsche blumen, printed to a high standard. The molded exterior is decorated with applied porcelain roses and forget-me-nots in pink, yellow and blue. The extensive reticulation of the bowl and stem is highlighted in dark green on the interior and gold on the exterior. Light shines through the pierced body and it is especially attractive seen from above (photos #3 and #9). The base is marked with the blue-green Sandizell backstamp (crowned N 'Dresden') and also an illegible impressed model number (might be #7557). It is in very good condition, no chips, cracks or crazing. A couple of tiny losses to applied leaf tips. Some missing glaze on base and edges from time of manufacture. Measures 10"H (base to top of handles) x 8"W (handle to handle). A lovely piece to gift or add to your collection!

ROCOCO REVIVAL STYLE: the word Rococo is a combination of the French 'rocaille' meaning stone and 'coquilles' meaning shell, and undulating lines and S-curves were prominent in Rococo design. Rococo hit its peak in France from 1730-60 before its delicacy and playfulness were swept away by serious Neoclassical art. There was a renewed interest in Rococo between 1820 and 1870 when it influenced almost every aspect of interior design in Europe. Dresden decorators were most successful in employing this style using a profusion of foliage, flowers, fruits, shells and scrolls and its popularity continued into the 20C and now into the 21st.
