Beautiful handpainted Nippon display or serving plate c.1890-1921 with gilded moriage banding, 10". The classic Japanese design evokes Mount Fuji rising calmly above Kawaguchi Lake with fishing boats and huts framing the scene. The painting is as fresh as the day it was made. Gilt and beaded border on rim and handles. This two-handled plate is marked 'hand painted' and this exact mold was used by Morimura Brothers (Old Noritake). Condition is very good; slight surface marks; some rubbing to gilt edges; no chips, cracks or hairlines. One potting/firing flaw on the underside typical of older pieces. Blue-green glaze. Measures 10" (handle-to-handle); 5.5" (base). A lovely piece for the collector of older hand painted Nippon porcelain.
The name Nippon simply means Japan. Nippon porcelain production began in 1891, when exporting to America was opened. It ended in 1921 when a tariff stated that items had to be plainly marked in English. Nippon porcelain was wholly hand painted until 1904. After 1904, pieces began appearing with decals and stencil designs.

POEM FROM THE NIPPON ARCHIVES:
Japan is a land of mountains.
But is there another that so moves the hearts of the Japanese people?
Is there another that so exemplifies the mysteries of nature?
Is there another that presents itself to us in so many moods?
Is there another so perfectly beautiful?
This mountain is a source of security, beauty and pride.
Mount Fuji has much to teach us.
Japan's most beautiful mountain is the mountain of our Japanese hearts.
Mount Fuji, the peak of Japan.
The only one in the world.
