Wonderful close-up of a ships' riggings and masts by the French artist Camille Hilaire (1916-2004). The original lithograph is in a very low edition number 60 of 120. Very few were ever made. On the back there is a black stamp that says the lithograph was part of the Smik Collection. The print is encased in a narrow wood frame and is double matted. Dimensions are 24.5 x 27.5" and the image size is 15.5 x 17.5".
Hilaire is a listed artist and has a strong record of auction sales. Hilaire studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris as well as with André Lhote who was a friend, and is known for his post-cubist style and overlapping color fields. This lithograph of the ships' mast is illustrative of that style showing rusts, blacks, and many tonal ranges of those colors constructing the image. The artwork has been in my personal collection for 40+ years so was one done when Hilaire was middle-aged.
