Beautiful hand-painted porcelain incense burner with iron red handles and feet, four reticulated, pierced openings in the lid, trefoil shaped, a Buddhist lion atop the lid, and different hand-painted scenes on the front and back. This lovely rectangular form is marked on the base, Hand Made Occupied Japan over and under a fan mark, as shown. The burner stands approx. 5.5" tall and is 5" wide and 3" deep. The hand-painted scene on one sides depicts a bird flying among peonies, and on the other side are more birds, some with fantastical plumage. The borders are diaper patterned, some with elaborate swirls, some with crisscrossed diamonds, another with a maze-like pattern, and yet another with elongated diamonds, banded top and bottom. Primary colors are green and red, with some gold decoration.
