While I don't know the purpose of this small box with an envelop-sized slit at the top which lifts up from the base but does not actually come apart, I have listened to much speculation from others and one of the suggestions is that it held cigarettes. Whether this was the intended purpose or not, this wonderful little box has quite a bit of character and hand-decorated appeal. The top and sides have bone inlay designs and there is string inlay on the box as well. Size of this mystery box is 4.5" long x 3.5" wide x 2 7/8" high. The origin of the box may be Indian though this is merely speculation. Overall condition is good save for a few age related issues such as a separation of the wood here and there.
