An elaborately decorated green jasperware beer stein with cherubs in the top border among leafy scrolls and a group of three friars or monks on one side sampling beer and three alpine card sharks on the other side engaged in a round of play. The mug is in near perfect condition though it does have flower frog on the inside which I am inclined not to remove though it does make the mug substantially heavier. The base is marked with a four numeral number "3198". Just below this are the numbers 6 and 0 with a large space between. The maker is likely Schafer and Vater, a firm that marked some of its wares with the four digit numeral with the artist no. below as this one is done. Whoever the maker is, the stein is superbly designed and will be one of your favorites. Size is 5 1/8" high and 4.25" in diameter at the base and approx. 3.25" in diameter at the top.
