This charming French gravure is by Alphonse Mucha, the legendary European Art Nouveau artist who was largely responsible for the popularity of beautiful women and nature at the turn of the 19th to 20th centuries. This piece was produced in 1900 on heavyweight Japon paper, in a limited first French edition, as an illustration for Emile Zola's novel, Clio. Signed in the plate. The paper is slightly darkened with age, but the image is colorful and quite collectible as it is not the usual Mucha ladies reproduced extensively throughout the 20th Century. We purchased this in France, and it is original, not a copy! Published by Anatole France de l'Academie Francaise in 1900. It comes to you framed, measuring 24 cm. square. The image is 10.25 x 6.25 cm.
