Nail Flower Art by Pauline A. Owens Circa 1977 Pol-O-Craft
Where to start to describe this FABULOUS creation. This is from the late 1970s and is so clever in it's design. It has a small yellow ceramic vase in the center filled with flowers mounted on a rectangular piece of dark varnished wood. Now, that doesn't sound so fabulous until you look closer. The flowers are all made from different size NAILS... yes metal carpenter nails! They have been driven into the varnished board at different levels, in groupings or alone and then the nail heads have been painted soft pastels and autumn colors to resemble flowers in an arrangement. When the palette has been laid you have a unique and delightful work of art. The designer has grouped several nails in a circle to create a flower with several petals and then a single nail or more with much smaller heads poking out a little higher than the group to form the stamen. There are smaller nails with petals painted on and a different color center for smaller flowers and single nails for even smaller flowers. Then several teeny nails "spray" out around the floral arrangement and remind me of a filler type flower like Baby's Breath.
This is so STUNNING! I purchased two of these "Nail Flower Art" pictures at a little antique shop that was going out of business and have held off listing this one because I love it. I just wanted to enjoy it for awhile. Now it is time to find it a new home.
There are two stickers on the back, one is from the company here in the USA and the other label appears to be a piece of old masking tape with numbers.....written in pen. The gold and black company label reads; "Pol-O-Craft Originator Nail Flower Art © Pauline A. Owens 1977" along with the mailing address and their two shop's addresses. One at the factory outlet in Wyomissing Pa. and the other a "Summer Shoppe" in Stone Harbor, N.J. There is some ink stamped printing in the center which reads; "Sale Item As Is".
This creation is in great condition with just a few small mars to the wood around the edges. Nothing glaring that detracts, it adds character to an old piece, in my opinion. The nails are all present and the paint is all there. There is a bit of dust on the nails, I think I got a lot of it with a tiny bottle brush. But it may need a bit more work if you want. It doesn't show unless you are really looking for it, the flowers take center stage. There is also a bit of sticker residue on the upper right corner of the wood. I tried to clean it off with some mild soap and then some goo remover but it is old and dried and won't budge and I did not want to remove any of the varnish. There is also a small chip on the base of the yellow vase. I had my husband touch it up with some yellow, he has a good eye for matching color.
The board measures 10 1/2" wide by 9 1/4" high by 1" thick and has a nice bracket mounted on the back for hanging. This is ready to be displayed right out of the box. Please view the photos as an integral part of the description and use the magnifying feature.
