Japanese Porcelain Tazza – Meiji Period: 1886 – 1912
This is an absolutely gorgeous antique Japanese Porcelain Tazza or footed bowl/compote signed Hichozan Shinpo a trade name used by a group of Arita, Japan kilns and makers of porcelain wares mainly for export during the late Edo and Meiji periods. The full signature most closely resembles that of The Scented Orchid Company founded by the Fukagawa family of the Arita collective and manufactured porcelains from 1875 to 1894.
This exquisite tazza displays a lively decoration of colorful red and yellow butterflies midst clusters of beautiful flowers against a striking blue glaze. The rim of this fabulous tazza is slightly ruffled and the stately footed base is also lovingly decorated with flowers against the white porcelain.
This splendid tazza weighs 1 pound 12.4 ounces, is 9 ¾ inches in diameter, 3 inches tall and the footed base is 5 ¼ inches in diameter. This lovely piece is in very good condition for its age with no chips, cracks, repairs save a few very tiny spots of glaze loss on the bowl surface that in no way diminishes the quality or impact of display of the piece.
