This I believe is a very old piece; likely a young girls first work. The counted cross stitch - forms a girl feeding a swan. The fabric is a loose weave and that weave has yellowed a bit with age, but evenly and now is an antique white color. The frame is basic black and that work was done by "Sol" Mednick's of New Haven, Connecticut. The seal in still in place and that looks rather old. The piece is at least early mid-century - perhaps much older.

The frame could use some stain, but it is structurally sound. The back string is just that; string from eye hooks.
