Being the hopeless romantic I am of those really old back and white movies, I've had this collection of old RPPC actress postcards for close to 35 years, bagged up and hidden away in my closet, in my little treasure chest. I can vividly remember the day I purchased them from an old friend of my mom's when she lived in British Columbia. We were all sitting at my mom's kitchen table, talking about old movies, old actors and actresses, favorites of ours from the movie scenes of years ago. The older lady had more of a recollection of those stars from her era while mine were more from the 40's and 50's. That's when she went back to her apartment and came back with this old photo album full of postcards that she told me had been given to her own mother back in 1903 by a very close friend. I've included a picture of that date on the inside cover of the photo album. I was fascinated with how beautiful these women were, how real they looked on the cards and how well done up some of the cards were, some with sparkles, some glossy, some embossed, some black and white, some colored. She offered to give them to me as they were of no use to her anymore, so as to not appear cheap, or embarrass my mom, I offered her what I thought was a more then fair price for the whole album full. She thanked me and told me she would put that money to good use. I was very happy to have been able to purchase them from her and I cherished them and what they had stood for in the film industry for years after that. Now, its time they find a new home to someone else who has that connection to the film industry that began so many years ago.
As an added note, I removed the postcards from their place in the album just for picture taking purposes. I've since replaced them back into the album.
Included in the lot are 90 full sized cards, 4 half sized cards and 8 book mark cards. Some are blank on the back while others have writing on them. A lot of them still have their original stamps affixed to them, dating back to the early 1900's. They include such actresses as Julia Neison, Clara Butt, Edna May, Ellen Terry, Zena Dare, Lily Elsie, Margaret Halstan, Maud Jeffries, to name a few.
I'd really like to keep this collection of postcards together as they all came from one woman who's connection with the film industry in the early 1900's surpassed anything that I could have ever imagined.
