First time on the market , these rare and incredible antique Jhumka earrings are made of 18K yellow gold. ( Unmarked and actually 70% gold , they have been professionally and electronically tested for accuracy. ) ...... Nineteenth century from Shiraz Iran , the ancient Persian city known as the city of poets , wine and gardens . ......
Elaborate doesn't even begin to describe the numerous elements combined to create these remarkable Middle Eastern earrings . The word Jhumka refers to the shape of the drops , as in ' little bells' , in this case two 'bells' per earring are suspended from open-ended hoops, one of the classic Jhumka styles . Decorated allover with intricate filigree work and articulated everywhere with little 'balls' that rim the 'bells' and bottoms of the hoops, adding a musical quality with each movement .
Please note these earrings are substantial both in size and weight. They are a full 3" long and weigh 14.2 grams each . The open-ended hoops with small eyes on the ends are to thread a strand of silk through and attach to the hair, dispersing the weight and making them more comfortable to wear . In addition to the weight, the ear wires are relatively thick and will not fit those lobes where the piercing is small. (A good jeweler could thin the wires . I have had it done very successfully with an antique pair of Chinese earrings. )
