1920's vintage Hungarian gauzy yellow cotton "peasant" style day dress with smocking, drawnwork and hand-embroidery.
These pretty, exquisitely feminine dresses were popular daywear throughout the Art Deco 1920's and 30's. Romantic and easy to wear, their delicate, ethereal charm greatly appealed to the affluent West.
This pretty example in gauzy yellow cotton is hand-embroided with stylized flowers, leafy tendrils with tiny blossoms and leaf and flower sprigs in soft shades of blue, lavender, yellow and white. The shoulders and waist are beautifully smocked and embroidered in the same color tones with the addition of pink, and there are "ladders" of drawnwork and a corded neckline couched in criss-crossing blue threads. The silhouette is free-flowing and lively and the dress slips easily on over the head and has pearl button closures at the cuffs.
In excellent vintage condition, clean, very strong and ready to wear with one pinhole only, measures a wearable 43-inches long with an unexpanded 40 bust, 38 waist and hip and 23-inch sleeve.
