I am thrilled to offer for your consideration a marvelous victorian era (circa 1880's) bride basket.
The cranberry hand blown art glass bowl measures 9.75" across and stands 4" tall. It is marked with the sandblasted Fenton logo with the number "9" underneath, a designation used by Fenton to denote that the bowl was made in the 1990's. It has a wonderful crimped and ruffled rim and was done in Fenton's fish scale pattern as can be seen by the lovely rows of scales that decorate the sides. This regal cranberry brides bowl sits upon an equally majestic silver plated basket/centerpiece.
The silver plated basket/centerpiece which houses the cranberry Fenton brides bowl bears the mark of James Deakin & Son, Sheffield. This firm was founded in 1866 and represents the partnership of James Deakin and his son, William. In 1886 two more sons joined the partnership and the name was changed to James Deakin & Sons in 1888. From research of the pattern number stamped on this centerpiece, P 5963, I am led to believe that on a few were produced in the 1880's and that this piece is quite rare as it has never been reproduced.
The James Deakin & Son silver plated basket/centerpiece 10" wide as well as deep. It stands 6.75" tall on three ornately detailed legs adorned with animal faces. The tri-cornered platform has an edge that is etched with a raised fern design while its top is decorated with floral, scroll and fern decor. It has a large cartouche formed by sprigs of fern that has not been dedicated or initialed. Raised in the middle of the platform is and elaborate perch created by three arching silver plated ribbons that curl outward to each of the three corners. Leaning against each ribbon is a reclining cherub. Sitting atop the perch is a draped cloth and crossed beams that support the basket in which the cranberry brides bowl fits. Elaborate detailing surrounds the ri of this basket. The bowl is a perfect fit to this Deakin centerpiece/basket as it screws in tightly.
The Fenton cranberry brides bowl and James Deakin & Son brides basket/centerpiece are each in wonderful condition. There are no chips, flea bites, flakes or cracks to the bowl and I see no wear, plate loss or restoration to the basket/centerpiece.
