This is a very unusual Kuan Yin/Guan Yin Figurine showing portion of the figurine unglazed. This figurine was made in Kutani, Japan. Anyone having information on this item I would appreciate hearing from you.
This is a rare Kutani Goddess of Mercy Figurine. She is about 12 inches high. No matter how she is dressed she is always seen barefoot. The mesh fabric found on the base of this kannon is found on older Japanese pottery attesting to the age of this piece.
She is known as the protector of the seafarers, farmers and travelers. She is also known as the goddess of comfort and thus protects, the sick, the lost, the senile, the troubled and the unfortunate.
The Goddess of Mercy is also known as the woman who brings children, generally boys but if you ask for a girl she will be beautiful. Her name means "she who hears prayers".
The Goddess of Mercy is sometime seen with several heads and arms. She is also seen carrying a basket with a fish in it and thus is referred to the Goddess of the Southern Seas.
This was purchased from an Oriental person and he was able to read the marking as Kutani.
