Feminine whimsy at it's best is found in this very large Victorian celluloid vanity chest.
The printed scenes shown on the tall bombe doors and the lidded compartment top are beautifully detailed.
Each door has a different scene of ladies and gentlemen in full formal attire enjoying the festivities at what
appears to be a garden party or an afternoon tea or perhaps a grand ball. The artist used lovely, soft, pastel colors
There is a woodland scene on the lid showing a man walking down a long, winding road. This print is done in sepia
tones. The rest of the chest is covered in cream colored forget-me-not flowers and green leaves.
The condition of this wonderful, multi compartment box is amazing considering that it dates to approximately 1870-80.
There are absolutely no chips, cracks, stains, fades or any peeling of the celluloid. The deep purple fabric on the sides and
drawer sill has lost it's soft velvet outer coat, but still retains it's rich color with no tears or rips or stains. The gilded brass
filigree closure that secures the lid to the doors is in nice working condition as is the drawer pull. There is some silk shredding
on the floor of the chest inside as well as on the interior door hinges which are covered in silk. All the implements that came with the chest are long gone. There remain two mirrors inside, one on each door. One mirror shows a large spot of darkening on the left side. The other mirror only has one small spot of darkening. The drawer once contained a rouge pot, powder pot, nail file and a nail buffer. These are all missing. The purple velvet ring station is in tact and in nice condition. The wall paper on the back of the box shows some small areas of missing paper on the very bottom of the box near the feet. I have photographed all of this for you. On a scale of 1 to 10, condition wise, this one comes in at a 9, in my opinion.
This lovely miniature chest is one of the largest celluloid vanity boxes and the that I have had the pleasure to own and now offer for sale. It is also the most beautiful of all the celluloid boxes that I have seen over the years. The scenes are ultra feminine and pleasing.
The measurements are: Height: 10", Width 13" and Depth 6".
