Manufactured by Ridgways, a Staffordshire Pottery in England, with the Rd No dating its registration to 1884. In the pattern, Devonshire", this highly patterned Victorian plate features a trio of brown transfer inset images; one with a rooster at water's edge with the sun rising beyond, another with a bird perched on the branch reaching out to capture a flying insect, and the third of an underwater scene with a pair fish amongst seaweed, coral, and tiny seashells. Large stems of daisies and a tiny overall leaf pattern surround these images, and the piece has been finished off with a border of stylized daisies. The transfers have been selectively tinted with a burnt orange glaze adding to the depth and interest.
With the standard manufacturer's stilt marks and two small glaze rubs on the rim, it measures approximately 9¼" in diameter and is in overall excellent condition with no chips, no cracks, and no repairs.
