Strapless / John Singer Sargent and the Fall of Madame X by Deborah Davis. Published by the Penguin Group, 2003. Hardcover with wine color boards and cloth spine decorated with copper lettering on the front cover and spine. 310 pages with black and white photos and drawings and 8 pages of glossy color photos.

This is a fascinating account of the life of America's most famous - and expensive, at the time - painter. His celebrity started in France and rose higher in the US. John Singer Sargent (January 12, 1856 – April 14, 1925) was an American expatriate artist and the "leading portrait painter of his generation" for his evocations of Edwardian-era luxury.

The story of his life is enthralling. He socialized with the leading figures of Paris and the US. Scandals abound and Sargent was at the heart of the most famous.

Condition: Ex. lib with a neat stamp on the front and rear endpaper and tape where the dust jacket was secured to the text. Otherwise the book and dust jacket are as new. Dust jacket still in glassine envelope.
