Caroline's Jewelry with a Past is offering a navette shaped 14kt. yellow gold silver topped woman's fashion ring c. 1870. The diamonds total 46 stones which include 4 round, prong set old European cut and an additional 42 round, prong set rose cut diamonds. The weights of the center stones are, 2- 0.20 carats and 2- 0.05 carats each all set in silver to enhance the brilliance of the diamonds. The balance of the stones are rose cut with a carat weigh estimated at 0.50 carats. The total carat weight of the ring is estimated to be 1.00 carat. The center of the ring, which is navette or "canoe" shaped is 1-1/8" long (north to south) X 1/4" wide (east to west). The shank is yellow gold. The ring is a size 7 and can be resized.

Silver-topped gold was used as early as the Georgian era and allowed silver to be backed with gold. Diamonds could be set in sturdy gold, but not be discolored by the yellow of the gold. Before this innovation, diamonds and other gemstones were set in silver. White gold was not yet developed and platinum was difficult to acquire and work.

The gold content of this piece has been tested using standard accepted testing methods, such as acid testing. The diamonds were measured for size using a standard jeweler's caliper. The diamonds were tested using a standard jeweler's diamond tester. The stones were not removed from the piece to determine exact carat weight.
