Caroline's Jewelry with a Past is offering an Edwardian era ladies fashion ring in platinum c. 1900. This wonderful navette shaped design features old European cut diamonds highlighted by piercing and millegraining in the metal work. There is a central, bezel set diamond of 0.10 carat. The 12 additional prong set, side diamonds total 0.30 carats. The total diamond weight of the ring is 0.40 carats (prox). Dramatically slicing through the ring and adding striking color are 8 baguette shaped, deep blue color sapphires. The central plaque of the ring is 1" tall (north to south) X 7/16" wide (east to west, not including the shank). The ring has a 14kt. yellow gold shank. It is a size 6-1/4 to 6-1/2 and can be resized. The piece weighs 2.9 grams.
Millegraining is a finishing detail usually made on platinum jewelry in which the surface has been made to appear "beaded". Millegraining work can also produce knife edging, patterns, and other design details. It is generally used with diamonds to give added sparkle without detracting from the stones.
The platinum and gold of this piece has been tested using standard accepted testing methods, such as acid testing. The diamond sizes were calculated using a standard jeweler's caliper. The diamonds were tested using a standard jeweler's diamond tester. The diamonds were not removed from the piece to do physical testing or for weight.
